Hum Dekhenge ( We Shall Witness)

Sometimes the power of poetry transcends all the speeches. Sometimes the power of poetry overwhelms emotions and takes control. Sometimes the power of poetry triggers a revolution. They remain etched and engraved in our hearts till the end of time. Poems which call for hope and revolution in an supressed society become anthems, invariably invoking and provoking the spirits to achieve the unthinkable.

Whenever there is a lull in a struggle, these poems blow life into the tired spirits.

There is this particular poem byย one of the great literary geniuses of Asia, Faiz Ahmad Faizย in Urdu. It’s called “Hum Dekhenge”ย (We shall witness). It goes like this :-

Hum dekhenge
Lazim hai ke hum bhi dekhenge
Wo din ke jis ka wada hai
Jo lauh-e-azl mein likha hai

Jab zulm-o-sitam ke koh-e-garan
Rooi ki tarah ur jaenge
Hum mehkoomon ke paaon tale
Ye dharti dhar dhar dharkegi
Aur ahl-e-hakam ke sar oopar
Jab bijli kar kar karkegi

Jab arz-e-Khuda ke kaabe se
Sab but uthwae jaenge
Hum ahl-e-safa mardood-e-harm
Masnad pe bethae jaenge
Sab taaj uchale jaenge
Sab takht girae jaenge

Bas naam rahega Allah ka
Jo ghayab bhi hai hazir bhi
Jo manzar bhi hai nazir bhi
Utthega an-al-haq ka nara
Jo mai bhi hoon tum bhi ho
Aur raaj karegi Khalq-e-Khuda
Jo mai bhi hoon aur tum bhi ho

Sometimes the magic of the poems is lost in translation. It’s like censorship, where you know the literal meaning but you can’t feel the spirit and the passion behind it. Anyway.

We shall Witness
It is certain that we too, shall witness
the day that has been vowed
of which has been etched on the slate of eternity

When the massive mountains of tyranny
will blow away like cotton.
Under ย the feet of the oppressed-
when the earth will throb deafeningly
and on the heads of our rulers
when lightning will strike.

From the abode of God
When icons of falsehood will be taken out,
When we- the faithful- who have been barred out of sacred places
will be seated on high cushions
When the crowns will be tossed,
When the thrones will be brought down.

Only The name will survive
Who cannot be seen but is also present
Who is the spectacle and the beholder, both
I am the Truth- the cry will rise,
Which is I, as well as you
And then Godโ€™s creation will rule
Which is I, as well as you

  1. very powerful!

    Reminds me of ghandi’s quote:
When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall… think of it, ALWAYS.
